Presto-Sygan Road, which has been closed several times for construction since early 2011, is finally reopening for good.

PennDOT announced the road that connects South Fayette and Collier townships will reopen Thursday night after several stints to repair the damaged road surface and nearby bridge.

Rainwater runoff washed away one of the lanes in early 2011, forcing PennDOT to install an alternating stop sign that often backed up traffic. After working on that section twice in late 2011 and over this past summer, PennDOT closed another portion to work on a bridge near Thoms Run Road in September.

PennDOT scheduled the new reconstruction project immediately after the previous one because workers were concerned of businesses, recreation fields and homes in Newbury would be practically marooned.

“PennDOT thanks area residents and motorists for their patience and cooperation while this important infrastructure improvement work occurred,” PennDOT spokesman Jim Struzzi said in a press release.

The project included replacing the bridge structure and roadway while also making drainage improvements at the intersection with Thoms Run, PennDOT said. More than 4,000 vehicles use Presto-Sygan Road in that area every day.
