Stories From The People Who Call South Fayette Home

Who better to talk about Newbury’s past, present and future than the folks who call this special area home.
Newbury has a past, present and future. That story, and its tales, are best told by the folks who grew up here, work here and are part of the greater community that Newbury is proud to join – and call home.

South Fayette Commissioner

The best thing about the South Hills is the concentration of livable communities, each with their own unique character. Being a native Pittsburgher, and growing up east of the city, we chose the South Hills area, and South Fayette, for the unique combination of the rural feel of the township, but the accessibility to the downtown area. I want to see South Fayette grow in a direction that continues to preserve that rural feel that is so unique to this community.

What's special about Newbury is that it will bring that sense of community to South Fayette, which is a large township divided by 79. One side of the township migrates to the South Hills area, where the other side migrates to the airport area. Newbury will unite South Fayette, and create that "downtown" that the community is missing. The fact that Newbury is redeveloping a brownfield makes this a very special project, by reusing land, rather than creating more urban sprawl. I am most looking forward to Newbury creating that central gathering place that South Fayette needs, as well as convenient shopping that I will no longer have to drive outside of my community for.

This land is quintessential "Pittsburgh." It represents the best of western Pennsylvania, our history, culture and unique topography. The site encompasses beautiful, steep, wooded hillsides, creeks and waterways, and a hilltop area with a view for miles around. You can see clear to downtown Pittsburgh from the plateau on top of the hill! The former industrial use and the proximity to the dynamic, growing communities of the South Hills, together with the rebirth of the site as a sustainable mixed-use community, captures both our rich heritage and the exciting future for Western Pennsylvania.

Newbury will provide a unique mix of uses, home types and amenities, so everyone will find something here that they love. This diversity will enable Newbury to be a vibrant gathering space and community that draws upon the wide variety of people and culture here in western Pennsylvania.

I'm most excited about the transformation of the site from an abandoned brownfield into a thriving community, a focal point for social gathering, civic life and economic growth for South Fayette Township and the broader Pittsburgh region. The transformation of once-forgotten land into a unique community best represents the values and passion that gets me excited about development.

The South Hills is where my husband and I grew up. Our families are here - it's our community. Our kids are active participants in sports and activities in South Fayette. It's a great school district, and we have a lot of friends in the community. We would not live anywhere else!

We are excited that Newbury will be a great place to go to dinner, take a walk, shop and just hang out with the kids. There really is not a place like Newbury in the South Hills, let alone so close to home. It will be really nice to have a place to do all the things we need and love to do.
